Bringing Craig and The Worries to Life: A Journey of Healing and Hope

Writer: Elijah FelixElijah Felix

Creating a children's book is always a deeply personal process, but for me, bringing Craig and The Worries to life was an emotional journey I never anticipated. The story of Craig, the main character, reflects not only the struggles many children face in growing up but also my own experience of loss, grief, and the pursuit of healing after the death of my younger brother, Craig.

Craig passed away at a young age from brain cancer and was never given the chance to grow up and experience life alongside us. As a family, we experienced the kind of grief that reshapes your life. When I decided to write Craig and The Worries, I didn’t just want to create a book. I wanted to create something that would help children facing their own emotional battles, like bullying, confidence struggles, and the difficult process of dealing with grief and loss. The story addresses the challenges of making friends, standing up for yourself, and most importantly, navigating the worries that sometimes feel too big to handle.

Considering the characters and themes found throughout the book, writing this book was quite mentally taxing. There were times when the weight of memories would resurface, and the emotions would flood back. The process of illustrating the book, alongside the writing, became a form of catharsis—though it was also incredibly difficult. Each chapter brought me closer to the realization that sharing this story with others could help children understand their mental health challenges, and it could also honor my brother's memory in a way that was meaningful and powerful.

Craig and The Worries is more than a children's book—it's a legacy. It’s my way of keeping my brother’s spirit alive by helping others understand the importance of mental health, empathy, and kindness. Writing it wasn’t just a creative endeavor; it was an emotional and personal mission to give children a voice when they feel lost in their worries, just as I often felt when my brother was taken from us.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health challenges, know that you're not alone. Craig and The Worries is here to show kids (and adults) that it's okay to talk about their feelings, ask for help, and stand up for themselves.

Thank you to anyone who has read this book and has come along on this journey with me. I hope the story of Craig and his worries resonate with you and your family, offering comfort and the strength to face whatever worries may come.
